Rebirth of metal. graphene is reborn with atom rearrangement technology
If the basic unit of matter is an atom, then the basic unit of the manufacturing industry is the 'material'. This is why science and industry are concentrating on the development of new materials that utilize the characteristics of various materials.
However, metals such as graphene have a way to further improve their performance. Aligning the atomic arrangement of the material in one direction creates a single crystal metal.
The Ministry of Science and Technology announced on 18 that Researchers at the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) Multidimensional Carbon Materials research group Rodney have developed a technique for manufacturing high-value single-crystal metal foils from existing metal foils. The research, which was jointly conducted by Shin Hyung-joon, Professor of Ulsan Science and Technology and Professor Yu Won-jong of Sungkyunkwan University, was published on the 19th.
Although monocrystalline metal foil has a uniform surface and higher electrical conductivity than polycrystalline foil, it has a limitation in that it is expensive to manufacture and can not be manufactured in a large area.
The researchers have developed a new manufacturing technology called contact-free annealing, which has succeeded in fabricating single-crystal metal foils of up to 32㎠ at a cost one-thousandth lower than previously. Performance has also improved. In fact, the researchers fabricated monocrystalline copper and found that the current is 7% better than before.
The produced single crystal metal itself is a new material, but it can also serve as a 'casting mold' for growing other metals. In fact, the researchers produced monocrystalline graphene with a single crystal copper-nickel alloy foil.
Prof. Rodney said “We have demonstrated that we can easily convert a variety of metals into single crystals.” and “We expect silicon single crystal growth technology to be applied to various fields and change the world.”
