Antibiotic resistance can be overcome in Angelica Utilis Makino
Detecting effective substances for new anti-toxic infection treatment without resistance
Prof. Kim Kyung-gyu (Department of Sungkyunkwan University School of Medicine) and Prof. Lee Seung-seo (University of Southampton, UK) have shown that Angelica Utilis Makino can inhibit the virulence of resistant Staphylococcus aureus and effectively treat infection with resistant bacteria.
The researchers found that a substance called zanthoxylerol, which is made from Angelica Utilis Makino, inhibits the synthesis of virulence factors of Staphylococcus aureus, which is one of the typical resistant bacteria, and that the bacteria causing the infection are killed by immune action without causing the disease. In addition, we have found a method of synthesizing this substance by organic chemistry and synthesized various derivatives to obtain PM56, an antioxidant substance having better properties than zanthoxylerol.
Prof. Kim said "By verifying the success of new antibiotics that inhibit toxicity, we can expect to develop new antibiotics without resistance."
The results of the study were published as an ASAP article on November 15 in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry in the International Journal of Medicinal Chemistry.
