Representative examples of the imaging modalities to be covered are CT, X-ray, ultrasound, PET, SPECT, PET-CT, and PET-MRI.
GBE5030 Advanced bio&nano materials 3 6 Major Master/Doctor 1-8 Biomedical Engineering - No
This course is intended to provide an advnaced bionanomaterials used in medical applications. It is intended for advanced graduate students who have a basic background in organic/polymer chemistry, physics, biochemistry and materials science. The nature of the subject is such that the course must integrate both materials science and biology. It is the purpose of this course to provide the student an understanding of the fundamental principles associated with current biomaterials research and to understand the issues associated with medical applications of these materials. The goal is to enable students in the course to read the nanobiomaterials literature with critical understanding.
GBE5031 Advanced Tissue Engineering for Biomedical Engineer 3 6 Major Master/Doctor 1-8 Biomedical Engineering - No
This course will provide an overview of cell biology fundamentals, an extensive review on extracellular matrix and basics of receptors, followed by topics on cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions at both the theoretical and experimental levels. Subsequent lectures will cover the effects of physical (shear, stress, strain), chemical (cytokins, growth factors), and electrical stimuli on cell function, emphasizing topics on gene regulation and signal transduction processes. Tissue engineering will be introduced by reviewing tissue structure and function and the clinical need for tissue repair. An overview of scaffold design and processing for tissue engineering will be reviewed and the application of tissue engineering to specialized tissues and organs will then be addressed in depth. Specific organ systems include skin, muscular skeletal system (vascular grafts, blood substitutions, cardiac patch, and heart valve), nervous system (peripheral and central nervous systems), liver, pancreas, and kidney.
